The Mokka, already on sale, is Vauxhall’s first venture onto the compact sports utility vehicle scene and has proven top sellers like the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Yeti in its sights.
Two petrol and one diesel engine are up for grabs in a Mokka range that comes in two or four-wheel drive and four trim grades of S, Exclusiv, SE and Tech Line, the latter aimed at company car drivers. Prices are from £15,995.
Vauxhall expects just over half its customers to opt for the front-wheel drive variant, while the most popular engine will be the 1.7 CDTi diesel, selling appreciably more than either the 1.4 or 1.6-litre petrol variants.
What the Mokka achieves is to effectively blend SUV practicality with passenger car comfort, the cabin boasting comfortable space for five, though the boot isn’t huge.
Splashes of chrome around the cabin centre are designed to give a premium feel and there are 19 storage spaces, including a pair of gloveboxes in the dash. That said, there are also a few cheap plastics.
The model available for testing was a 1.4-litre 140PS Turbo 4×4 with Start/Stop and six-speed manual transmission.
Standard features include the likes of traction control, hill start assist, descent control and switchable ESP, and while the official average fuel figure is just under 43.5mpg the exclusively city and suburban road route ensured we couldn’t match that figure.
