Korean car maker SsangYong is ramping up the power with the latest version of its Korando crossover model.
The versatile SUV not only receives a significant power boost for the 2016 model year, but also gets better economy and reduced CO2 emissions.
SsangYong says the improvements are due to a new 2.2-litre diesel engine, offering the choice of two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive and either a six-speed manual or new automatic transmission.
Top end punch is hiked to 178PS and torque to 400Nm – up by 19.4 and 11 per cent over the previous 2.0-litre diesel unit.
And maximum pulling power is delivered from a low of 1,400rpm and maintained through a wide range up to 2,800rpm for smooth, progressive driving from the start.
Strides have also been made with emissions which have been cut to 139g/km, down from 147g/km on the previous two-wheel drive manual model, while fuel economy is up to a Combined 53.3mpg for the two-wheel drive manual compared with 47.1mpg on the model it replaces.
Designed by the Italian styling house Giugiaro, the latest Korando also comes with stuff like a new piano black radiator grille plus new-look 16 and 17-inch alloy wheels and larger diamond cut alloys on the flagship model.
Inside, there’s an upgraded infotainment system on all models and entry grade SE gets an RDS audio system with MP3 player, Bluetooth and iPod / iPhone connectivity.
Moving up a level to EX brings a seven-inch hi-res touchscreen with audio streaming from smart devices and a link to the rear view camera.
The range-topping ELX also benefits from a TomTom navigation system, and all feature a USB memory slot, Aux port and HDMI port.
And the likes of electric windows, air-con, cruise control, roof rails, front fog lights, six airbags and a rear parcel shelf are standard on even the cheapest Korando version at £15,995.
Four-wheel drive adds £1,500 to the tab of every model, meaning SE 4×4 is priced at £17,495 while the flagship ELX 4×4 automatic costs £22,495.
SsangYong’s UK chief Paul Williams said: “This is a significant evolution for the Korando. The power upgrade brings greater refinement, while the car continues to deliver unrivalled levels of equipment and value.
“No other car in its class has such a strong towing capability, nor such a comprehensive warranty for complete peace of mind.”
All models in the SsangYong range are covered by a five-year limitless mileage warranty.
