James McMurtry – Levelland
James McMurtry, son of American novelist Larry, came up with one of the finest album titles on record with his 1995 release Where’d You Hide the Body.
The bleak Levelland is the stand-out track – with lyrics like ‘Daddy’s cotton grows so high, Sucks the water table dry, His rolling sprinklers circle back, Bleeding it to the bone’.
Coincidentally, the Texas town of Levelland was the site of several UFO sightings in November 1957 when motorists reported seeing a large, egg-shaped object which emitted a blue glow and caused their cars to conk out.
