Honda CR-V – class is permanent
POPULAR car names don’t necessarily reflect the nature of the beast but the Honda CR-V, or Comfortable Runaround Vehicle as it is dubbed by the Japanese brand, most definitely does.
If anything Honda is actually doing its top-selling SUV a disservice, because the big family crossover is much more than a simple conveyance for popping to the shops.
Now into its sixth generation with a heritage dating back to 1995, the latest CR-V range consists exclusively of hybrid models and unlike the previous line-up also includes a plug-in (PHEV) hybrid.
Both feature Honda’s 2.0-litre petrol engine with assistance from an electric motor and our tested model, the e:HEV self-charging hybrid, has four-wheel drive. The e:PHEV also comes with a larger battery.
No doubt about it, the SUV scene – whether it be compact, mid-size or full blown models – is a congested one with a wealth of choice but the CR-V has not only stood the test of time but just keeps getting more desirable.
As families become ever more discerning you need to cover all eventualities and the spacious Honda does just that, courtesy of a combination of its fuel economy, driving dynamics, versatile seating, large boot and overall reliability.
The three trim levels of Elegance, Advance and Advance Tech, the latter only available for the plug-in, can be specified and include everything from adaptive cruise control and mobile phone charging pad to a heated steering wheel and powered tailgate.
Stepping up to Advance trim adds £3,100 to the tab but brings in the likes of a 12-speaker Bose sound system, sliding panoramic glass roof, electric memory seats, rear-view camera and an adaptive high beam among other goodies.
Move inside the well thought out cabin and there’s plenty of room all round with adjustable seats up front while three can sit comfortably across the back, a flat floor ensuring that a centre rear passenger has somewhere to put their feet.
Taking centre stage high on the dashboard is a nine-inch touchscreen that’s simple to operate and has shortcut buttons and a sound system volume knob while a 10.2-inch digital display sits directly ahead of the driver.
Durable fixtures and fittings feel like they will stand years of family wear and stowage boxes, bins, trays, cubbies and slots are dotted all round the vehicle along with cup and bottle holders.
Acres of rear space doesn’t mean that boot capacity is compromised either, the load area capable of accommodating 579 litres of clobber plus having the versatility of 60:40 split/fold rear seats.
Despite having 184PS of punch the CR-V e:HEV is more about achieving the right balance of comfort, composure and performance than outright wallop, which is pretty much what families want anyway.
So if the 0-62mph acceleration time of 9.5 seconds borders on sedate, our fuel economy return of 42.5mpg over 300 miles of mixed urban and rural motoring with a full complement on board was impressive.
The CR-V is an easy, relaxing and refined car to drive too, with its nicely-weighted steering and raised driving position. Yes, it’s classed as a large SUV but it certainly doesn’t feel that big when you’re piloting it.
Front and rear sensors, along with the rear-view camera, make parking easy and there’s also a Honda Parking Pilot available for squeezing into the tighter spaces.
It’s a safe car too, with the latest Honda SENSING driver assistance tech as standard and higher spec grades getting the 360 system that includes Active Lane Change Assist and Front Cross Traffic Monitor, Lane Watch for viewing your blind spot on the infotainment screen and an auto tilt mirror to help with reversing.
