Benz bends – and leans like a skier
- NEW CAR NEWS – MERCEDES-BENZ S 63 AMG
MERCEDES dream machine the S 63 AMG Coupe will lean into bends like a motorbike or skier when it arrives later this year.
It’s all thanks to a curve tilting function that enables passengers in the two-seat flyer to sit more firmly – especially on country roads.
The object of the world-first system is not to reach higher cornering speeds, but to produce an even more pleasant motoring experience and is active between 19 and 112mph.
The model will also come with safety features like Road Surface Scan and Active Body Control as standard, both part of the model’s Body Control suspension set-up
Beneath the S 63 AMG Coupe’s bonnet is the most powerful member of the BlueDIRECT engine family, the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine producing a massive 585bhp.
And the largely aluminium model is the latest to benefit from the German brand’s AMG Lightweight Performance strategy, so the car’s weight has been cut by 65kg – even though there’s a higher output and more extensive standard equipment than with its predecessor.
Upshot is that the rear-wheel drive Benz can scorch from 0-62 mph in 3.9 to 4.3 seconds, depending on model variant, and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
And though engine output has been increased by 41bhp compared to the previous CL 63 AMG model the newcomer still consumes less fuel, a Combined figure of 27.9mpg making it the most fuel-efficient model in its area of the market.
Buyers will even have a choice of bespoke sounds as the sports exhaust system has automatic logic-controlled exhaust flaps in both rear silencers.
When driving in sport or manual modes the exhaust flaps open earlier for a fuller, more emotive engine note.
The car is due to make its debut at next month’s New York motor show though prices and UK spec won’t be announced until later.
