Grade A for latest baby Benz
THE new Mercedes-Benz A-Class, due to hit UK streets in June, will both redefine modern luxury and revolutionise interior design in the compact class.
That’s the promise from the boys at Benz for a newcomer that will also offer a number of functions that were previously the preserve of the luxury class.
And in certain situations, it will be able to drive semi-autonomously for the first time, courtesy of functions adopted from the S-Class limo – including improved camera and radar systems allowing it to see up to 500 metres ahead. All models of the new A-Class are also powered by new, efficient diesel and petrol engines, and although the Benz has retained a sporty appearance, it comes with a longer wheelbase.
That means better shoulder, elbow and legroom plus 370 litres of luggage space – up 29 litres on the outgoing model.
The manufacturer is also heralding a new multimedia system called MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience, which it says will usher in a new era in Mercedes connectivity.
A unique feature of the system is its ability to learn thanks to artificial intelligence, so MBUX can be adapted to suit the user.
Among its features is voice control with speech recognition, which is activated with the code words Hey Mercedes, and a head-up display.
The new A-Class can be ordered from March onwards, with first UK deliveries in June.
Daimler AG board member Ola Kallenius said: “New technologies must place the focus on people and make their lives easier. The new A-Class does this in many ways, and becomes an emotional and intelligent companion.”
